Board of Education Members:
The East Brunswick Board of Education is comprised of nine (9) elected members. Every year, in April, three (3) of the nine (9) members are elected to serve a three-year term. The Board meets approximately twice a month from April through February and weekly in March. Meetings are generally held on Thursday evenings at 8:00 pm at the Jon R. Kopko Administration building on Route 18. These meetings are videotaped and broadcast, unedited, on EBTV Channel 3 on Mondays at 1 pm & 10 pm and Fridays at 9 pm. All meetings, except the closed sessions which are designated for personnel, student or legal matters are open to the public and advertised on EBTV Channel 3, posted on the district website and at the East Brunswick Public Library. Most regular meetings are divided into two sessions, a public session and a closed session. With the exception of the legally permissible issues discussed in closed session, all board business that is legally permissible to do so takes place during the public session with the public present. These include recognition of staff and/or students, presentation of awards, policy, agenda, finance, operations, curriculum, hiring and resignations of personnel and approval of minutes of past meetings. All Board voting, except specific limited actions allowed by law, takes place during the public portion. All discussion and voting taking place during the closed session is governed by the Open Public Meetings Act, which prohibits discussion of certain subjects, such as personnel issues, contract negotiations, individual disciplinary issues, legal matters and any other information that may directly affect an individual or group of individuals. The Board attorney is present at meetings where legal support has been deemed necessary. The Board of Education establishes its committees annually at the reorganization meeting, as well as whenever it deem a committee revision may be necessary. Currently there are 11 recognized committees: Community Programs, Buildings and Grounds, Finance, Long-range Planning, Policy, Special Education, Student Services, Technology, T&E (Thorough and Efficient) Curriculum, EBEA Negotiations and EBPSA Negotiations. |
